Russia has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in connection with the us appeal to the international organization with the intention to launch the procedure for restoring sanctions against Iran. This is reported by TASS with reference to the Deputy permanent representative of Russia to the UN Dmitry Polyansky.
According to him, due to the recent events surrounding the implementation of resolution 2231, Russia requested an open meeting on the morning of August 21.
Earlier, US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo met with the Chairman of the UN security Council and submitted a complaint to the organization about Iran’s failure to comply with the terms of the Joint comprehensive plan of action for the settlement of the Iranian nuclear program (JCPOA), which should lead to the launch of the procedure for restoring anti-Iranian sanctions under resolution 2231. He also announced his intention to resume the sanctions within 30 days.
Britain, France and Germany refused to support US plans to restore sanctions against Iran. According to the joint statement of the countries, such steps contradict their efforts under the JCPOA.
The US has repeatedly demanded an extension of the ban on arms deliveries to Iran, which expires on October 18, 2020, in accordance with the terms of the so-called Tehran nuclear deal with the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany. At the same time, in 2018, the American side announced its withdrawal from this agreement and threatened Iran with additional sanctions.
